Public Defender of Georgia Strengthens Cooperation with Council of Europe

On September 8-10, 2025, representatives of the Public Defender's Office of Georgia paid a working visit to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. During the visit, they had the opportunity to meet personally with representatives of the main European human rights structures, share their experiences and identify new areas of cooperation.

The Public Defender of Georgia, as the country's national human rights institution, plays an important role in the protection and promotion of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.

During three days, the delegation held meetings with the European Committee of Social Rights, the European Court of Human Rights, the Commissioner for Human Rights, the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe and other important structures. The main issues of discussion were labour rights, health care, education, environmental justice, and the protection of the rights of vulnerable groups - children, women, older people and persons with disabilities.

The visit allowed the representatives of the Public Defender to further deepen their competence in the field of monitoring and promoting social and economic rights, as well as to strengthen cooperation with European partners. Sharing experience with the institutions of the Council of Europe will help the Public Defender’s Office to more effectively ensure the protection of human rights in Georgia and to promote the country’s approximation to international standards.

This initiative clearly emphasizes the joint efforts of the Public Defender of Georgia and the Council of Europe to ensure the effective protection of social rights for all, especially for the most vulnerable groups.

The study visit is organized within the framework of the Council of Europe project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia”. The project is part of the Council of Europe's 2024-2027 Action Plan for Georgia.
