Informational Meetings on Gender Equality in Zemo Svaneti Region
On September 5-6, 2018 representatives of the Equality and Regional Departments of the Office of the Public Defender of Georgia hold meetings with women, police staff and social workers on gender equality in Zemo Svaneti region.
According to the information received from women living in Latal and Lenjer, infrastructural problems and in particular drinking water and road issues have impact on human rights situation of women. It was also noted that economic empowerment of women living in Zemo Svaneti carries particular significance.
During the meeting with social workers, challenges pertaining to the non-existence of psychological services to the victims, low number of social workers and transportation problems were noted to be remaining. Police staff underlined the regional specifics, in particular low level of reporting on violence against women and domestic violence due to traditional views and gender stereotypes.
