Public Defender's Visit to Geneva

Ucha Nanuashvili, the Public Defender of Georgia, and Lara Jamarauli, the chief specialist of the Department of International Relations and Communications of the Public Defender's Office, took part in the regional and bureau meetings of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) in Geneva, on March 6-9, 2017. They also attended the Global Alliance's annual conference on Role of National Human Rights Institutions in Conflict Prevention and Establishment of Peaceful Society.

The Public Defender was elected chairman of the finance committee at the General Assembly of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions. The committee oversees the budget of the European Network and is responsible for obtaining funds. Together with Georgia, members of the finance committee in 2016-2019 are the Belgian Interfederal Centre for Equal Opportunities (UNIA) and the Equality and Human Rights Commission of the United Kingdom.

In addition, for the second consecutive year the Public Defender has been a member of the European Coordinating Committee (ECC) of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI), which is responsible for the administrative, management and financial issues of the Network.

The Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions is an international association, which unites human rights institutions from four regions: Africa, America, Asia and Europe. The Alliance is managed by the bureau composed of four institutions (A status accredited) from each region. By the decision of the General Assembly, the Public Defender of Georgia was elected as a representative of Europe to the bureau of the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions for a three-year term together with Germany, Finland and Croatia on March 22, 2016.
