Public Defender’s Meetings in New York

The Public Defender of Georgia has met with the Head of the European Department of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York, Arch Puddington - Distinguished Fellow for Democracy Studies, Freedom House, and Elen Aghekyan and Nate Schenkkan - representatives of Freedom House, within the framework of his official visit to the United States. In the Human Rights Watch office, the Public Defender reviewed the human rights situation of Georgia with Rachel Denber, Deputy Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division. Ucha Nanuashvili also met with David Tolbert, President of the International Center for Transitional Justice.

The Public Defender briefed the international organizations working on human rights issues of the human rights situation of Georgia and provided information on the challenges in justice, delayed investigation of alleged ill-treatment by law enforcement officials and the necessity for the establishment of an independent investigative mechanism.

The Public Defender also discussed the issue of labour safety, the process of constitutional reform and the situation in penitentiary establishments with the representatives of the international organizations.
