Public Defender of Georgia Delivers Speech at Sixth Session of Parliamentary Association Committee in European Parliament
Nino Lomjaria, the Public Defender of Georgia, spoke about the human rights situation in the occupied territories of Georgia, stressing the necessity of punishing the killers of Archil Tatunashvili and Giga Otkhozoria, at the sixth session of the Parliamentary Association Committeein the European Parliament on April 26, 2018.
"The international community, together with Georgia, should take specific steps and use various tools and mechanisms in order to ensure that the murders of Archil Tatunashvili and Giga Otkhozoria, as well as many similar cases, do not remain unpunished. Impunity encourages violence in the occupied regions," said Nino Lomjaria.
The Public Defender also spoke about the necessity of implementation of reforms in the justice system, deficiencies in the investigation of ill-treatment committed by law enforcers, the reforms ongoing in the penitentiary system, violence against women and equality, labour rights, freedom of speech and expression.
At the session of the EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee, Members of the European Parliament, Members of the Parliament of Georgia and representatives of the Government of Georgia discussed the situation in the occupied territories of Georgia, implementation of the Association Agreement and Free Trade Agreement, the ongoing democratic reforms and constitutional amendments of Georgia, situation in the judiciary, introduction of open governance principles in the work of the Parliament and the country’s economic development plans.
