Public Defender Delivers Speech at the 20th Session of UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
On 31 August 2018, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria attended the 20th Session of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and delivered a report on behalf of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
The event was aimed at marking the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, as well as at reviewing the achievements of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, challenges and successful examples of cooperation with stakeholders.
The Public Defender of Georgia emphasized the importance of cooperation between the Committee and the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions in the process of implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and expressed hope that the challenges would be solved through steady cooperation and joint efforts.
Nino Lomjaria also spoke about the performance of the Public Defender of Georgia as a monitoring body of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and noted that the guidelines prepared by the Committee were crucially important in the process of the establishment of the monitoring body, as well as in terms of preparation of the alternative report.
Apart from Nino Lomjaria, speeches were delivered by the Chairman and members of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the UN Special Envoy on Disability and Accessibility, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and representatives of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Disability Alliance.
The Public Defender's Office of Georgia has been a full member of the Bureau of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions since 2016.
