Public Defender Attends Meeting of European Network of National Human Rights Institutions

On September 13-14, 2016, Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili attended meetings of the Financial Committee and the European Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions in Brussels.

The meeting focused on the progress achieved and the initiatives aimed at strengthening the activities and influence of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) in the long run. The sides also discussed policy issues of working groups and ENNHRI strategic plans.

The European Network of National Human Rights Institutions has actively worked to promote human rights in Europe for 15 years. The organization helps to set up and accredit national human rights institutions, coordinates exchange of information and best practices among its members, takes care of capacity building and trainings; is involved in international and regional mechanisms of protection and promotion of human rights, as well as legal and political developments of Europe.

On 1 December 2015 Georgia’s Public Defender was elected as a full member of the Bureau of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions at the General Assembly of the organization; at the same time, he was elected as a member of the European Coordinating Committee for the second consecutive year for a three-year term. The Committee is charged with administrative and management issues. In March 2016 the Public Defender of Georgia became a representative of the European region in the Committee’s board.
