Public Defender Holds Introductory Meeting with Members of Special Preventive Group

On 20 May 2019, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria held an introductory meeting with members of the Special Preventive Group. The rights and responsibilities of members of the Special Preventive Group, professional ethics and rules of cooperation were discussed at the meeting.

Members of the Group also received information about with the activities of the Public Defender's National Preventive Mechanism (Department), Department of Human Rights in Defense, Department of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Department of Child’s Rights.

Members of the Special Preventive Group are selected through a competition held once in two years; the terms of competition are determined by the order of the Public Defender of Georgia.

According to paragraph 1 of article 191 of the Organic Law of Georgia on the Public Defender of Georgia, the Special Preventive Group regularly inspects the situation of detainees, prisoners or other persons deprived of liberty and convicts, as well as inmates of mental health facilities, care homes for children and older persons, in order to protect them from torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
