Meeting of Council of Religions at Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection
On July 26, 2017, members of the Tolerance Center of the Public Defender of Georgia met with Deputy Minister of Culture and Monument Protection Levan Kharatishvili, the Head of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation and employees of the Ministry at the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia.
In 2016-2017, the Council of Religions of the Public Defender of Georgia prepared a list of recommendations for state agencies, educational institutions and the media, which are under consideration.
The Deputy Minister of Culture delivered a big report on the projects and activities related to the sphere of culture of ethnic and religious minorities. The Council's recommendations on cultural issues and the challenges faced by religious communities, including the status of monuments and their maintenance, conservation, reconstruction and the problem of changing the image of historical monument as a result of reconstruction, were also discussed at the meeting. It was noted that the municipal budgets should include points providing for the maintenance of minority heritage monuments and in general, development of the culture of tolerance in the regions.
Finally, the Head of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation offered the Council of Religions to hold a meeting in every 4 months to effectively exchange information and timely respond to problems.
The first meeting of discussion of recommendations was held with members of the Parliament’s Committee on Legal Issues on July10, 2017.
