Meeting of Council of National Minorities with Deputy Minister of Education and Science
On May 4, 2016, Public Defender's Council of National Minorities held a working meeting with Deputy Minister of Education and Science Lia Gigauri and representatives of various departments of the Ministry. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Education and Science.
At the opening of the meeting, the Public Defender appreciated the fact that the meeting was underway at the Ministry of Education and Science, where the members of the Council were able to receive detailed answers to all interesting topics.
Deputy Minister Lia Gigauri reviewed the Ministry’s activities in terms of integration of ethnic minorities. She stressed the importance of a new model of bilingual education, which unlike the 2010 model, provides for teaching of different subjects in different languages. Textbooks will be renewed and teachers will be re-trained according to the near model in the new future. She also spoke about the creation of standards of small languages in the national curriculum, as well as about parental education programs and other initiatives of the Ministry aimed at improving the process of study of the state language by national minorities.
The questions of representatives of the Council of National Minorities, which concerned teachers' professional growth, hours of the native language, translation or preparation of textbooks, teaching of a small language and infrastructure issues, were answered by the Deputy Minister and representatives of the National Examinations Center, the Teachers Professional Development Center, the National Curriculum Department, the Educational and Scientific Infrastructure Development Agency and Zurab Zhvania School of Public Administration.
