Statement on the Decision of Some Members of the Council of Ethnic Minorities to Leave the Council

We would like to respond to the information spread about the decision of some members of the Council of Ethnic Minorities of the Public Defender of Georgia to leave the Council.

It is worth noting that neither the Council of Religious Minorities nor the Council of Ethnic Minorities, which are functioning under the Public Defender of Georgia, is an entity structurally related to the Public Defender’s Office. Both councils are independent, self-regulating entities and despite many years of cooperation with the Public Defender’s Office, the Public Defender has never been involved in the councils’ independent policy, activities or decision-making. Accordingly, it cannot take responsibility for the internal processes developing in the councils.

The Public Defender's Office actively works on the protection of the rights of religious and ethnic minorities, and for this purpose, the Public Defender and his representatives, at the regional and central levels, annually hold meetings with representatives of religious and ethnic minorities, as well as with non-governmental organizations working on the relevant issues. The challenges identified by the Office and the recommendations developed to eliminate them are reflected in the Public Defender’s parliamentary reports.

The Public Defender and his Office will continue to cooperate with all organizations working on the protection and advocacy of the rights of religious and ethnic minorities.
