Public Defender’s Office Re-granted A Status at GANHRI General Assembly

On 5 March, 2019, the Public Defender of Georgia was awarded a certificate of accreditation at the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) held in Geneva, Switzerland, which proves the full compliance of the Public Defender's Office with the requirements of the UN Paris Principles. As a result, the Public Defender's Office was re-granted A status.

On March 4-6, Deputies of the Public Defender, Tamar Gvaramadze and Ekaterine Skhiladze, as well as the chief specialist of the Public Defender's Office, Mariam Tavdgiridze, participated in the annual meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and the General Assembly of the European Network of Human Rights National Institutions (ENNHRI).


At the General Assembly of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI), First Deputy Public Defender Tamar Gvaramadze presented the organization’s financial report 2018 and the budget 2019. * The Public Defender's Office had been chairing the ENNHRI Financial Committee over the last three years.

At the GANHRI working meeting, the First Deputy Public Defender spoke about the rights of older persons and the Public Defender's future plans and activities in this direction. It should be noted that the Public Defender's Office, along with the Human Rights Center of Finland, has been elected as a member of the newly created group of GANHRI, which works on the rights of persons with disabilities, as a representative of Europe.

At the working meeting organized within the framework of GANHRI by Cecilia Jimenez-Damary, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons, Tamar Gvaramadze talked about the situation of conflict-affected persons and eco-migrants in Georgia, challenges and best practices of the Public Defender.

At the conference dedicated to the national human rights institutions’ role, practices and expertise in protecting the women and girls’ rights, Deputy Public Defender Ekaterine Skhiladze spoke about the organizational culture in the Public Defender's Office, the importance of creation of the Department of Gender Equality, the efforts of the Public Defender's Office aimed at protecting gender equality and challenges in this direction.

The rights of female migrants were also discussed at the meetings and consultations were held on the importance of sharing the experiences of national human rights institutions for the implementation of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.
