Ekaterine Skhiladze Wins Kato Mikeladze Award 2016

The Kato Mikeladze Award was founded in Georgia by the Women's Fund in 2013 and it is marked every year, on November 29 - International Women Human Rights Defenders Day. Celebration of this day is related to Georgian feminist, activist and publicist Kato Mikeladze, who received education in Europe and struggled for awaking a desire for active involvement in social and political life among women at the beginning of the twentieth century.

This year the Kato Mikeladze Award was won by Deputy Public Defender Ekaterine Skhiladze. Ekaterine has been working on women's rights and gender equality issues for many years. At her own desire, the money received as a prize will be spent on opening of reading halls in three villages of the Kvareli municipality. Young people will be able to gather and exchange views for the better future in the villages where the vicious and despotic culture and traditions have been particularly strong.

The main aim of the introduction of the Kato Mikeladze Award is to recognize and appreciate women human rights defenders, raise public awareness of their activities, ensure safe working environment for them and encourage the younger generation.

The Public Defender of Georgia joins the International Women Human Rights Defenders Day and congratulates Ekaterine Skhiladze on this great success.
