Construction of New Building for Public Defender’s Office is Actively Ongoing

On November 8, 2022, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria and her employees visited the construction of the central office of the Public Defender's Office, viewed the ongoing works and placed a time capsule in the foundation of the building.

The construction of the building began in June 2022 and, according to the contract, it should be completed in 18 months, in December 2023.

2,123 square meters of land was handed over to the Public Defender's Office for the construction of the new building on 6 Faghava Street in Tbilisi, on which a 5-story building with a total area of 3,036 square meters will be built.

The Tbilisi central office of the Public Defender's Office has been located in a rented building since July 2018, as the building on 6 Nino Ramishvili Street was dilapidated and posed a threat to the life and health of the employees. In addition, due to its small size, the building was overcrowded and not adapted enough for persons with disabilities.

"It is good that at the end of 2023, the Public Defender's Office will have a modern building, the location, internal space and external perimeter of which will be adjusted to the needs and comfort of the community as much as possible; and what is very important, it will be fully accessible for persons with disabilities.

The project includes spaces for a reading hall, library and small exhibitions. There will also be a children's corner, a working room for journalists, a sufficient number of rooms for holding meetings and consultations with citizens. So, the new building will meet the needs of all kinds of events, both for the Public Defender’s Office and for human rights and educational activities," the Public Defender said at the ceremony of placing a time capsule in the foundation of the building.
