Appeal of Collaborative Platform on Social and Economic Rights to Governments of CoE Member States
The Public Defender’s Office of Georgia joins the statement of the Collaborative Platform on Social and Economic Rights (COE-FRA-ENNHRI-EQUINET), which calls on the governments of the Member States of the Council of Europe to reaffirm their full commitment to the protection and implementation of social rights as guaranteed by the European Social Charter system.
The statement emphasizes the importance of social rights to protect the well-being and dignity of all people and the need for renewed efforts to protect and improve these rights, especially in light of the current socio-economic challenges.
The statement notes that the right to housing and the right to protection against poverty and social exclusion as fundamental human rights are essential for the enjoyment of other human rights and the overall well-being of individuals and families.
The Platform also calls on the governments to ensure the adoption of the collective complaints procedure as an effective mechanism for good governance, and to enhance dialogue and cooperation, both between Charter organs and States Parties, as well as amongst all relevant stakeholders, including National Human Rights Institutions, Equality Bodies and civil society organisations.
The Platform, one of the members of which is the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia, unites the institutions of the Council of Europe, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions and the European Network of Equality Bodies.
The statement was adopted by the Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe at the 14th meeting of the Platform held on July 1, 2024, in line with the Reykjavik Declaration adopted in May 2023, and addresses the High-Level Conference on the European Social Charter to be organised under the auspices of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on 4 July 2024, in Vilnius, Lithuania.
