Public Defender Meets with US Charge d'Affaires
On December 5, 2025, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani met with US Charge d'Affaires Alan Purcell, and discussed the situation of human rights in the country.
The Public Defender spoke about the amendments made to the legislation on freedom of assemblies-demonstrations and expression, and introduced his position on these amendments to the Embassy representative, as well as the amicus curiae opinions prepared by the Office; he also spoke about the Public Defender's involvement in the discussion of the proposed draft law "On the Rehabilitation and Support for Juveniles in Conflict with the Law". The rights of persons detained during protests and prisoners and the results of monitoring of the ongoing court proceedings against them were other topics discussed at the meeting.
The meeting was attended by Tamar Gvaramadze and Elene Ghudushauri, Deputies of the Public Defender, as well as Jamie Shufflebarger, US Embassy's International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Program Officer, and Ekaterine Popkhadze, a legal issues specialist.
