Public Defender Meets with CoE Commissioner for Human Rights
On May 23, 2023, Levan Ioseliani, Public Defender of Georgia, met with Dunja Mijatovic, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, as part of his official visit to Strasbourg.
Dunja Mijatovic congratulated Levan Ioseliani on his election to the position of the Public Defender and emphasized the need for close cooperation between the Council of Europe and the Public Defender’s Office.
The Public Defender reviewed the situation of human rights in Georgia, focused on the challenges related to the media, freedom of expression and minority groups. Other topics of discussion included the occupied territories and the rights situation of the population living near the so-called dividing line.
The parties talked about the priorities of the Public Defender’s Office and the role of the Office in the implementation of the 12-point plan in the process of the country's integration with Europe.
