Public Defender Holds Meeting of Consultative Council of Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On January 30, 2018, the ConsultativeCouncil for Monitoring the Implementation, Protection and Promotion of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities held its 13th meeting. The meeting was attended by the Public Defender of Georgia, Deputies of the Public Defender, representatives of the Public Defender’s Office and visiting members of the Council, the composition of which was renewed several months ago.

At the opening of the meeting, the Public Defender explained the mandate and role of the advisory body of monitoring the implementation and promotion of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to the new members of the Council. Nino Lomjaria also briefly spoke about the fruitful efforts of the previous composition of the Council and encouraged the new members to strengthen joint initiatives in order to improve the monitoring efforts and respond to the challenges in the process of monitoring the implementation and promotion of the Convention.

The Head of the Department of Persons with Disabilities presented information about the Department’s implemented and planned measures for monitoring and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.

Participants of the meeting held a discussion about the important issues relating to the rights situation of persons with disabilities and monitoring of the UN Convention. The next session of the Council will be held within 2 months.
