Department of Equality
The process of formation of the Department of Equality has ended at the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia. A relevant structural unit was created; chief specialists and the head of the Department of the Equality were chosen as a result of vacancy announcements and various tests.
The main tasks of the department include:
- Supporting the Public Defender in exercising the authority stipulated by the Law of Georgia ”On elimination of all forms of discrimination”;
-Conduction of monitoring of compliance with national and international acts in the equality rights sphere in Georgia;
- Elimination of all forms of discrimination and ensuring equal rights of every natural and legal persons under the legislation of Georgia, irrespective of race, skin colour, language, sex, age, citizenship, origin, place of birth or residence, property or social status, religion or belief, national, ethnic or social origin, profession, marital status, health, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, political or other opinions, or other characteristics;
- Monitoring of elimination of all forms of discrimination.
Maka Gioshvili was appointed the Head of the Department of Equality. She started to carry out her responsibilities on November 20, 2014. Maka Gioshvili graduated from the Juridical Faculty of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in 2003.
In 2007 she received the Master’s Degree in Human Rights Law from the University of Montpelier.
In 2011 she received Master’s Degree in International Public Law from the University of Strasbourg.
For years Maka Gioshvili worked in human rights sphere.
At various times she occupied positions of project manager, legal advisor, chairman of the board and the project coordinator in the non-governmental organization “the Article 42 of the Constitution”.
