Report of the National Preventive Mechanism on the Monitoring Conducted in the Temporary Center of the Migration Department
On 23 December 2019, a workshop was held on migration and asylum within the framework of the joint project of the Public Defender's Office and the UNHCR Georgia.
In their welcome speeches, First Deputy Public Defender Tamer Gvaramadze, UNHCR Representative in Georgia Kemlin Furley and Director of the Migration Department Shalva Enuqidze focused on the joint efforts to improve the situation of the beneficiaries and expressed hopes for cooperation.
The National Preventive Mechanism of the Public Defender's Office presented a report on the monitoring carried out in the Temporary Accommodation Center of the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs; the presentation was followed by exchange of information and discussion about the findings of the monitoring, alternatives to detention and legal guarantees for the detainees.
The UN Refugee Agency in Georgia presented guidelines on the alternatives to detention at the event. The representative of the International Organization for Migration spoke about the organization's programme on the voluntary return of illegal migrants to the countries of citizenship and the challenges relating to integration. The Legal Aid Service of Georgia introduced its mandate in the direction of working with asylum seekers.
