Meeting with Representatives of Non-governmental Organizations and Lawyers

On June 17, 2016, members of the Public Defender’s National Preventive Mechanism met with representatives of non-governmental organizations and lawyers in the city of Kutiasi. The meeting was aimed at exchanging information about the rights situation of detainees and abuse of power by police officers.

Several cases, access to a lawyer’s service and violation of questioning procedures were discussed at the meeting.

Members of the National Preventive Mechanism will periodically hold similar meetings in the regions of Georgia in order to strengthen their activities.

* The Department of Prevention and Monitoring of the Public Defender's Office regularly checks the condition and treatment of detainees and convicts in order to protect them from torture, cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment.
