The Public Defender of Georgia met with members of the Ossetian Forum

The Public Defender of Georgia Ucha Nanuashvili met with members of the consultation council at the Public defender – the Ossetian Forum and discussed mainly legal rights of Ossetian community living in Georgia. The conversation mainly concerned issues of teaching Ossetian language, Ossetian culture, as well as problems connected to the citizenship, detentions at the so-called “demarcation lines” and situation with regards to prisoners and issues of restitution. It was decided that members of the working group, together with the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia would jointly draw up concrete reports and recommendations that would be presented to the Parliament and the Government. The meeting in Tbilisi was attended by Shida-Kartli and Kakheti-based Ossetian non-governmental and community organizations and local activists.

The Ossetian Forum that was formed at the initiative of the Public Defender of Georgia is a permanent working group that provides consultations to the Public Defender with respect to ethnic Ossetian population. Formation of the Ossetian Forum aimed at eradication of negative results of the conflict; protection of citizens rights and interests of citizens affected by the Georgian-Ossetian conflict and armed actions; promotion of eradication of hate and negative attitudes; protection of right of Ossetians living in Georgia; support of teaching and popularization of Ossetian language, literature and poems; realization of joint educational programmes, including that in the sphere of human rights.
