The Public Defender Meets with the Head of the EU Monitoring Mission

On January 28, 2015, Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili met with Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission Kestutis Jankauskas. The Public Defender’s Office actively studies legal rights of the conflict-affected population and the meeting was aimed at exchanging information and deepening of cooperation with the monitoring mission.

Ucha Nanuashvili and Kestutis Janauskas discussed frequent facts of detention of citizens on the demarcation line, legal rights of local residents and security issues. The Public Defender provided information to representatives of the mission on those everyday issues that residents are facing due to unresolved conflicts.

The Public Defender believes that the Georgian authorities should take every necessary measure to prevent incidents in Gali and to restore meeting of the response mechanism that would introduce significant contribution into improvement of safety of population on the demarcation line with Abkhazia and residents of Gali district in Abkhazia.
