September 21 is the International Day of Peace. This day serves to strengthen and spread the idea of ​​peace between peoples. The theme for 21 September 2017 is "Together for peace". Its aim is to unite the representatives of all groups of society around the idea of ​​strengthening the culture of peace.

According to the Public Defender of Georgia, peace is of vital importance for Georgia, where we strive to establish a society based on respect for human dignity, in which human equality and peaceful and harmonious coexistence of different ethnic, religious and social groups will be ensured. Peacebuilding requires involvement and tireless efforts of every member of the society.

The Public Defender's Office has been studying the rights situation of conflict-affected persons and providing recommendations to the relevant bodies since 2014. However, the three-year experience made it clear that the low level of cooperation between the parties remains the main challenge, which worsens the rights situation of conflict-affected persons.

The Public Defender of Georgia calls on both the Georgian authorities and the de facto governments in Sokhumi and Tskhinvali to express their readiness to cooperate in humanitarian issues and give priority to improving the rights situation of conflict-affected persons during official talks.

The International Day of Peace was first observed in 1982, while in 2001 the UN General Assembly announced September 21 as a day of non-violence and cease-fire.
