Public Defender Visits Giorgi Mamaladze in Hospital

On 18 February 2019, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria visited Giorgi Mamaladze in the Gudushauri clinic and received information about his health condition. The Public Defender personally talked to Giorgi Mamaladze and the administration of the clinic.

According to the Public Defender, the convict is able to communicate. His main complaint is the limited ability to move his right hand and leg; he is undergoing a number of medical examinations and will be diagnosed in the nearest future.

When talking to journalists after leaving the hospital, the Public Defender said she had supported the pardoning of the archpriest as a member of the Pardon Commission. "I was a member of the Pardon Commission, when archpriest Mamaladze's case was considered as a special case. I supported his pardoning, but no consensus could be achieved to make the relevant decision.

The motive of my decision was a number of unanswered questions around the case, which we mentioned in the report as well. Since the investigative actions conducted in the case were faulty and problems were identified with regard to other procedural actions as well, I thought that pardoning of the archpriest would be the right decision. Now it is a prerogative of the new President to make the relevant decision," the Public Defender said.

Giorgi Mamaladze was transfered to Academician O. Gudushauri National Medical Center due to worsening of his health condition on February 15.
