Public Defender of Georgia Holds Official Meetings in Ankara

On January 16, 2024, Public Defender of Georgia Levan Ioseliani and Deputy Public Defender Elene Ghudushauri, who are on an official visit to Ankara, held meetings with representatives of the Turkish authorities.

At the meeting with Turkish Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç, the parties discussed the importance of inter-departmental cooperation between Georgia and Turkey; they also talked about extradition procedures and emphasized the need to protect human rights in this direction. Mechanisms of using modern technologies in the penitentiary system was another topic of discussion. The Public Defender spoke about the condition of prisoners in Georgian prisons; According to him, he visited many Turkish prisoners and talked to them personally, and he is always ready to make efforts to ensure that they have the opportunity to serve their sentences with dignity. Regarding the use of technologies, the Public Defender said that he was actively advocating for more intensive use of wristbands for inmates.

The Chairperson of the Committee on Equal Opportunity for Women and Men at GNAT, Ms. Çiğdem Erdoğan Atabek, spoke with the Public Defender of Georgia about the Committee's activities and close cooperation with the ombudsman institution, while Levan Ioseliani reviewed the activities of the Public Defender's Office in the direction of women's empowerment.

At the end of the day, the Public Defender met with the President of the Court of Cassation, Mr. Mehmet Akarca, and received information about the structure of the Turkish court and its cooperation with the ombudsman institution. The Public Defender spoke about the cooperation of the Office with the courts and discussed the practice of submitting the opinions of the friend of the court and constitutional lawsuits.
