Public Defender’s Statement on Incident Occurring in Kistauri Village of Akhmeta Municipality

Public Defender of Georgia Nino Lomjaria is echoing the incident that occurred in the village of Kistauri, Akhmeta municipality, and calls on the General Inspection Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to quickly and effectively study the case.

According to media reports, on December 22, 2017, about ten armed law enforcers searched Davit Khosiashvili's house for the purpose of finding weapons there. During the search, Khosiashvili's 31-year-old daughter-in-law T.N. and a 1-year-old child were at home. T.N. felt bad and she is still in critical condition in the resuscitation unit of Ingorokva Clinic. According to the family members, law enforcers behaved inappropriately and left the house without offering assistance.

According to the information released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the General Inspection Department has already begun to study the case. The Public Defender hopes that the vicious practice will not continue and the real result will be attained in the shortest period of time; there will not remain any unanswered question, while offenders will be identified and brought to justice.

The Public Defender reiterates that law enforcement officers must properly protect the rights and interests of citizens during exercising their official duties, in order to prevent violation of the fundamental rights to life and health.

Khosiashvili’s family members talked about police officer’s improper action and negligence with representatives of Public Defender as well.The Public Defender will monitor the study of the case by the General Inspection Department.
