Representatives of Public Defender’s Office Take Part in Panel Discussions and Conference in Rome

On September 13, 2023, representatives of the Public Defender’s Office, Akaki Kukhaleishvili and Nino Berishvili, participated in a panel discussion organized by the National Guarantor for the Rights of Persons Detained or Deprived of Liberty in Rome, the topics of discussion of which were practical issues of forced return and deepening of international cooperation.

On September 14, the representatives of the Public Defender’s Office also attended a conference held in the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament on the topic: "Protection of fundamental rights during forced return operations: A European perspective." At the conference, Akaki Kukhaleishvili, Deputy Head of the Department of the National Preventive Mechanism of the Public Defender of Georgia, spoke about the monitoring of forced return operations and the practice of Georgia.

It should be noted that in March 2022, an agreement was signed between the National Guarantor for the Rights of Persons Detained or Deprived of Liberty and the Public Defender’s Office on cooperation between the two institutions in terms of monitoring forced returns operations.
