The Public Defender of Georgia joins the UN Women International Campaign HeForShe

On November 25, on the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, the UN Women held a meeting on violence against women and girls. Simultaneously, a new global campaign “HeForShe” - solidarity movement of men for gender equality was officially launched.

At the opening ceremony of the movement, nine men well-known to the public who were invited by the UN Women confirmed their official support for the movement with their signatures. Among them was Public Defender of Georgia Ucha Nanuashvili. Also, signatories included Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Davit Usupashvili, the Head of the United Nations in Georgia Niels Scott, the US Ambassador to Georgia Richard Norland, Head of the EU Delegation to Georgia Janos Herman, representatives of the Rugby Union of Georgia and the Football Federation of Georgia.

When speaking at the ceremony of the signing, the Public Defender of Georgia spoke about the scale and acuteness of the problem of violence against women existing in Georgia, he also emphasized importance of involvement of men, as well as women human rights defenders and once again reiterated his firm position on importance of involvement in the international movement on violence against women and girls.

Solidarity movement HeForShe was officially launched on October 20, 2014, at the Headquarters of the United Nations with the speech of UN Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson. The movement was joined by the US President Barack Obama, the UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon, actors Kiefer Sutherland, Matt Damon and others. Currently, the movement has 200 000 supporters in the world while in Georgia it has 200.
