Statement on sexist remarks voiced by a representative of the political party “Free Georgia”

I would like to express concern with regards to offensive, degrading and sexist remarks towards women voiced by head of Imereti regional unit of the political party “Free Georgia” Gogi Tsulaia during his interview to media sources that was disseminated on March 14 of the current year, through regional news agency TopNews.com.ge.

Today, when there is a high indicator of violence against women in Georgia, when every day women experience suppression and unequal treatment in various areas of life, when they fall victims of stereotypical, sexists attitudes existing in the society, change of established attitudes and not their reinforcement is of decisive importance, and a role of every each of us in this is immeasurable. An especially important role in the resolution of this matter belongs to individuals exercising political activities who have access to mass media sources.

The comment of the representative of the political party “Free Georgia”, that I cannot even cite due to its extreme sexist nature, is offensive not only for women but for the entre society.

Taking into account gender inequality and situation of women’s rights in the country, I call on the head of the party, in the framework of the political council meeting to discuss the question of accountability of the head of Imereti regional unit because of his unethical, offensive and sexist comments issued through the media sources. I also call on them to institute effective measures for providing information to all representatives of the party on issues of women’s rights and gender equality in order to avoid similar cases in the future.
