Public Defender’s Meeting with Secretary General of Council of Europe

On January 30, 2020, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. At the meeting with Marija Pejčinović Burić, the Public Defender reviewed the human rights situation, including social and economic rights under the Social Charter, changes in the field of equality and women's rights, activities of the Public Defender’s Office in this direction, challenges in the process of selection of judges and gaps in the judiciary, as well as the issues of freedom of expression and media pluralism.

The Public Defender spoke in detail about the difficult human rights situation in the conflict regions, emphasizing the so-called borderization process, the safety of people living along the dividing line and the humanitarian crisis caused by occupation.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe expressed her support to the Public Defender’s institution in deepening cooperation with European structures.

The meeting was attended by Deputies of the Public Defender - Tamar Gvaramadze, Giorgi Burjanadze and Ekaterine Skhiladze.
