Public Lectures of Members of the International Advisory Board of the Public Defender

On April 15, 2015, members of the International Advisory Board of the Public Defender delivered lectures on issues of human rights and freedoms in several institutions of high education in Tbilisi.

Conflict and cooperation expert Jorgen Johansen spoke about democratic state governance, freedom, human rights and non-violent methods of public disobedience at Grigol Robakidze University.

The expert discussed principles of democratic governance; talked about establishment of gender equality; public demand - to register their views on discrimination, unequal treatment of people through non-violent, peaceful demonstrations; role of the media and impact of communications in formation of modern society.

Jorgen Johansen also spoke about the role of so-called whistleblower institute and importance of anonymous communications in structures for elimination of erroneous management, decreasing corruption and illegal actions.

UN Independent Expert on Human Rights and International Solidarity Virginia Dandan delivered a lecture - “Economic, Social and Cultural rights in the prism of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights” at the International Black Sea University. The expert also discussed the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with students.

Virginia Dandan and First Deputy Public Defender Paata Beltadze personally met with Rector of the University Ilyas Ciloglu and acquainted him with the initiative of establishment of a human rights school. The rector also expressed his wish to sign a memorandum with the Public Defender’s Office and for cooperation.

Ivane Javakhishvli Tbilisi State University was visited by the Public Defender and Adviser of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee Aage Borchgrevink who delivered a lecture to the audience on the topic - “Extremism, radicalism and terrorism in Europe: the case of July 22nd. Attack in Norway”. Aage Borchgrevink spoke about “A European Declaration of Independence”. At the meeting, he also provided information to students on his textbook “Norwegian tragedy” which describes life and activities of Anders Behring Breivik.

The Members of the International Advisory Board of the Public Defender carried out public lectures in the framework of the human rights school.
