Public Defender's Statement on Informational Meetings with IDPs

Public Defender’s representatives held informational meetings with internally displaced persons living in the cities of Batumi, Zugdidi, Kutaisi and Gori on 24-26 August 2015.

The aim of the meetings was to discuss the existent problems in the regions as well as how to solve them. The project coordinator updated the IDPs of the state policy on internally displaced persons and the activities of the Public Defender’s Office in this direction. Discussions also focused on the underlying factors and subsequent results of the regional problems.

The meetings revealed that one of the main problems is the lack of information among the displaced persons living in the region. In particular, they are not informed of the news and events that directly affect their daily life. The slow pace of transferring the IDPs’ living units to their ownership remains a problem as well. In addition, the living conditions in some of IDPs’ facilities are unbearable.

The meetings were held within the framework of the project Support to the Public Defender's Office to Solve the Problems of IDPs and Conflict-Affected Individuals funded by UNHCR and the British Embassy to Georgia.
