Public Defender Meets with President

On 27 October 2015 Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili met with President Giorgi Margvelashvili. At the meeting in the presidential residence the Public Defender and the President reviewed the investigation with regard to the videos showing torture. They also talked about how to prevent release of those videos.

The Public Defender said it was necessary that investigation into the cases of torture and ill-treatment be completed, as only few cases had yet been investigated.

"It is necessary to prevent release of the video tapes that have recently emerged, as they are counterproductive and create risks in terms of escalation of violence and tension", - the Public Defender said after the meeting with the President.

Given the high public interest, the President of Georgia called upon the law enforcement agencies to present accounts with regard to the facts of torture.

"Due to the high public interest, I appeal to all law enforcement agencies to present accounts of the facts of violence shown in the catastrophic videos, which, as far as we can see, were of systemic nature. In particular, they must present information about how many people have been prosecuted or charged. This is necessary in order to strengthen the confidence that the sadists and offenders were justly prosecuted and that they will never be forgiven either by society or political system for what they have done", - said the President.
