Public Defender’s Statement on April 9 Tragedy

31 years have passed since the tragedy, which resulted in Georgia's independence. On April 9, 1989, the Soviet Army brutally cracked down on peaceful demonstrators and killed a number of young fighters for freedom. Their self-sacrifice, unity of society, idea of freedom and endurance showed us that we were ready to free ourselves from the Soviet totalitarianism and live in a state based on independent, democratic and Western values.
