Expanded Meeting of Consultative Council for Monitoring the Promotion, Protection and Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On September 6, 2016, the Public Defender’s Consultative Council for Monitoring the Promotion, Protection and Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities held its seventh working meeting. The meeting was held in an expanded format and was attended by Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili, representatives of the Public Defender's Office, invited members of the Council, persons with disabilities and civil society activists.

The meeting was opened by the Public Defender. Ucha Nanuashvili said that a meeting of similar format was aimed at informing stakeholders of the activities of the Consultative Council, as well as their involvement in the ongoing processes. Activities planned and implemented for the monitoring of the implementation, promotion and protection of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities were discussed at the meeting. The invited members of the Council presented reports on their participation in the Council activities.

Representatives of the civil society discussed the rights situation of persons with disabilities and issues related to the monitoring of the implementation of the UN Convention. Views were expressed on the implementation of various activities in the mentioned direction in the future.

The meeting also focused on the main findings of the survey conducted for the purpose of assessing the reform of the capacity institute within the framework of the monitoring of the Convention by the Public Defender.

The meeting was summed up by the Public Defender, who reiterated the importance and the role of the involvement of persons with disabilities and organization working on the issues of persons with disabilities in the process of monitoring of the implementation of the UN Convention. For the same purpose he called on them to participate in the competition announced by the Public Defender for selection of invited members of the Consultative Council.
